The Buzz: Memorial Florists to close branch

The Buzz video includes both recent store closures and coming closures in the Fox Cities. (Feb. 1, 2018) Maureen Wallenfang/USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin Buy Photo Memorial Florists & Greenhouses will close its 30-year-old satellite store at 420 E. Northland Ave. in Appleton at the end of February. The six employees at that store will transfer to the florist’s main facility at 2320 S. Memorial Drive in Appleton. “We are in the process of consolidating,” said Bob Aykens, president and co-owner. Consumers’ habits in flower buying, similar to their habits in purchasing electronics and clothing, have continued to gain ground online. “Our online is growing. Walk-ins are somewhat declining or flat,” Aykens said. “We felt the need to consolidate.” He said staffing is also a huge issue as “Skilled floral staff is hard to come by.” A separate branch in downtown Neenah closed a year ago because of insufficient sales. Aykens said the overall business is growing, and they’ll focus on the Memorial Drive headquarters as its retail destination. That location will resume offering classes.
