The Pantone Color Institute, the global authority on color, has announced the “Color of the Year” for 2016. Serenity (Pantone 15- 3919), a cool serene blue, and Rose Quartz (Pantone 13-1520), a warm soothing pink, have been chosen to represent fashion, beauty, industrial design, and home furnishings and interiors for 2016. Both comforting and calming, fluid and connecting, this pairing evokes androgynous qualities.
While a majority of the past Colors of the Year have been bright and dominant, this softer take on color for 2016 represents a mindset of tranquility and inner peace. “Rose Quartz and Serenity demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.
The color pairing also challenges traditional perceptions of what colors are suitable for male or female individuals, Pantone explains. The company believes the gender blurring that is occurring throughout the fashion industry has created a “unilateral approach to color,” which “coincides with societal movements toward gender equality and fluidity.” As a result, the pink-and-blue combination has found its way into fashion accessories, activewear, weddings, and both men’s and women’s fashion.
With Rose Quartz and Serenity having such a huge impact on current fashion trends, it is reasonable to assume interior design will follow suit. The combo, reminiscent of the 1960s, will be influential at home furnishing shows; in furniture, rugs, and accent pieces and decorative accessories; and in interior paint colors. Patterns comprising these colors will be popular in household textiles, such as bedding and bath, dinnerware, and other home necessities.

In 2015, this color pairing appeared in a variety of advertisements, including those promoting high-end fashion companies, applications for smartphones, beauty brands, and even food and drink packaging. Magazines, calendars and stationery are also examples of these colors utilized in graphic design.
To select the Color of the Year, Pantone combs the world looking for color influences, including the fashion and entertainment industries, the world of art, popular travel destinations, technology and even upcoming sports events that capture worldwide attention.
Past Colors of the Year include Marsala (2015), Radiant Orchid (2014) and Emerald (2013).
