pantone_insideThe Pantone Color Institute, the global authority on color, has chosen two colors to portray 2016. Rose Quartz (Pantone13-1520), a soothing pink, and Serenity (Pantone 15-3919), a serene blue, have been chosen to represent multiple industries, including fashion, beauty and interior design as the 2016 Color of the Year. The pairing is comforting and calming as well as fluid and connecting.

Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, says of the color choices, “Rose Quartz and Serenity demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order.”

The pink-and-blue combination is also a nod to gender equality, Pantone explains, by challenging traditional perceptions of what colors are suitable for male or female individuals. The “gender blurring” of products, specifically in fashion, has “created a unilateral approach to color,” which “coincides with societal movements toward gender equality and fluidity,” the company says.

While Rose Quartz and Serenity certainly pair well together, other colors that Pantone says will complement these colors include:

  • other midtones, such as greens or purples
  • rich browns
  • creamy white or other light shades of pink or blue
  • all shades of yellow
  • warm-toned brights, such as radiant oranges or reds
  • metallics, especially silver
  • various gray tones
  • reddish purples, such as maroon or fig

To select the Color of the Year, Pantone combs the world looking for color influences, including the fashion and entertainment industries, the art world, popular travel destinations, technology and even upcoming sports events that capture worldwide attention.
