LILY NAMED FOR STAN POHMER
Stan Pohmer holds up the new ‘Lilium Stan Pohmer’
To honor a “trailblazing stalwart of the floral industry,” a white Oriental-hybrid lily, grown by The Sun Valley Group, was named for Stan Pohmer during the International Floriculture Expo in Miami Beach, Fla., in June.
Bobbi Ecker Blatchford, AIFD, AAF, PFCI, announced the honor, lauding Mr. Pohmer for his contributions to the floral industry, which include establishing the first horticulture program at Target Corporation, serving as executive director of the Flower Promotion Organization, and providing advice and insight on the floriculture business through his writings and consultation services.
Mr. Pohmer, CEO of Pohmer Consulting Group, Minnetonka, Minn. writes his well-received “State of the Industry” article for Florists' Review magazine every January.
During the ceremony, Mr. Pohmer spoke of what a blessing it is to be in the floriculture industry, surrounded by beautiful products and caring people with a passion for their business.
“We’re blessed because we have the opportunity to work with product that we genuinely like,” he remarked. “It’s God’s greatest gift, and we get to work with it every single day, and that’s really special.”
‘Lilium Stan Pohmer’ was hybridized in Holland and is grown in California. The flower-naming ceremony has become a tradition at the Expo; last year, a rose was named for Mrs. Blatchford.
