how to

permanent remembrance

A long-lasting keepsake for family and friends.

Design by Bill J. Harper, aifd fellow, aaf

Earthy neutral hues, achieved with a texturally intriguing mix of permanent and dried materials, suggest a masculine quality in this vertical composition, making it ideal for services for men. It’s also well-suited to those who loved the outdoors, both men and women alike, and it can be utilized during any season. The wreath that adorns the front of the vessel, fashioned by hand from the same permanent twig sprays featured in the design, lends a traditional element to the modern-day tribute. Because it is intended for display as a long-lasting remembrance, its ability to transcend the seasons is important, as is the neutral palette, which will coordinate with almost any décor. The fountain of wild oats, bundled into a group and bound at the base with wire, creates the strong vertical presence. To ensure stability during transportation and services, as well as for future display, weight the vase with sand before securing the dry foam inside.

MATERIALS: Sunflowers, Cone Flowers, Twig Sprays, Seed Pods and Mushrooms from Sullivans; preserved Banksias and dried Safflowers from Mirsky; Wild Oats from Schusters of Texas; Preserved Reindeer Moss from Knud Nielsen Company; Sahara® II Dry Foam and Waterproof Tape from Smithers-Oasis; wood picks from W.J. Cowee; cylinder vase from Jamali Garden Supplies.

HOW TO 1:
Fashion a permanent twig spray into a small wreath. Coil some of the twig spray’s branches around the wreath to maintain its shape.
  HOW TO 2:
Bend a reserved paper-wrapped wire stem into a hairpin shape, and anchor the wreath in the moss-topped pot with the hairpin-shaped stem.
  HOW TO 3:
Bundle the wild oats, and bind their stems, near their midsection, with waterproof tape. Bind again at the ends, adding wood picks on either side. Insert into the arrangement.
