 Cremation was the method of disposition for 34.9 percent of deaths in 2007, compared to 23.6 percent in 1997, according to the Cremation Association of North America.
 

The 10 U.S. states with the highest rates of cremation are:
 

  • Nevada, 69.9%

  • Washington, 69.2%

  • Oregon, 66.6%

  • Hawaii, 66.5%

  • Arizona, 63.5%

  • Montana, 60.8%

  • District of Columbia, 60.0

  • Vermont, 59.7%

  • Colorado, 59.6%

  • Maine, 58.4%
 

The 10 states with the lowest rates of cremation are:
 

  • Mississippi, 10.2%

  • Texas, 12.4%

  • Kentucky, 13.2%

  • Alabama, 14.6%

  • West Virginia, 16.6%

  • Tennessee, 16.9%

  • Louisiana, 17.4%

  • Arkansas, 21.2%

  • South Dakota, 21.8%

  • Indiana, 23.2%
