The California Cut Flower
Commission’s biennial forecast outlines the top floral looks.
With
eyes toward the influential fashion, interior design and home-décor
industries, a team of top floral designers, product developers and
color experts has forecast the five most important floral design
directions for the next two years. Use these looks as you design new
arrangements, tell stories with your displays, choose your
merchandising themes and order products to be featured in your shop.
The
American Floral Trends Forecast™ 2008-2009, the third installment of
this biennial trends forecast sponsored by the California Cut Flower
Commission (CCFC), is deeply rooted in the larger social trends that
influence consumer tastes, such as the increased focus on the
environment; awareness of cultural diversity and global influences;
and interest in handcrafted, artisanal items. As such, the forecast
transcends individual tastes.
On the
following pages, explore the five themes. Alongside images of
arrangements and settings that capture the looks, we explain the key
colors, elements, arranging styles and flowers that inform each. We
also have offered merchandising tips for customizing these on-trend
looks in your shop.
The trend
committee that developed the forecast in concert with the CCFC was
made up of Talmage McLaurin, AIFD, publisher of Florists’
Review magazine; Kim Morrill, AIFD, owner of Morrill
Support Inc.; Michelle Perry-White, AIFD, product
developer and designer for Caffco International; and
Maureen Welton, president and creative director of Eighteen
Karat International Product Sourcing, Inc., working with
Leatrice Eiseman, owner of the Eiseman Center for Color
Information and Training and executive director of the
Pantone Color Institute, and J. Keith White, AIFD, and
Charlie Groppetti, AIFD, members of the CCFC Design Team.
